CHAPTER 11

When Agent Perry removed the handcuffs, Nikki’s heart raced as she felt the freedom of her wrists.

“I’ll walk you out.” Quinn followed her toward the door. A burst of elation carried through her when she stepped out into the parking lot. Not long before she wondered if she would ever be able to do that. She took a breath of the fresh air.

“Nikki.” Quinn looked into her eyes. “I’m sorry I didn’t get here faster. I’m sorry you went through that.”

“It’s alright, it was no big deal.” Nikki shrugged.

“Yes, it was, I know it was.”

“I’m sorry, I never thought I would find the murder weapon. Princess sniffed it out.” Nikki walked along the sidewalk. “I also didn’t expect two FBI agents to be following me. Did you know they were here?”

“Me?” Quinn matched her pace. “I had no idea.”

“Do you think the couple they are after did it?” Nikki turned to face him.

“I’m not sure. The fact that they were spotted near the crime scene this morning makes me doubt it, but I can’t rule anything out.” Quinn settled his hand on her shoulder. “This case is dangerous, Nikki. Alex had all kinds of enemies, the criminal type, that won’t think twice about going after an innocent person who gets in their way.”

“You don’t have to worry about me, Quinn.” Nikki smiled. “I’m fine.”

“I don’t?” Quinn searched her eyes. “I was more than a little worried when I saw you in handcuffs today.”

“It was a misunderstanding.” Nikki rubbed her hands along her wrists as she avoided his eyes.

“Quite a misunderstanding.” Quinn shifted closer to her. “This is dangerous. You need to stay out of this.”

“I get it, Quinn.” Nikki met his eyes. “I didn’t expect to find anything, especially not the murder weapon. But like I said, you don’t have to worry about me.”

“I hope that’s true.” Quinn kissed her cheek, then looked into her eyes. “I might be busy, but I’m always here for you, alright?”

“Alright.” Nikki smiled. “Thanks, Quinn.”

“Always.” Quinn winked. “I have to go deal with these feds. I’m going to trust that you’ll be safe?”

“I’ll be safe.” Nikki gave his hand another squeeze, then headed down the sidewalk. At the moment she wanted to get as far away from the police station as she could.

After sending a quick text to Sonia to let her know that she was okay, Nikki headed straight for the only pawn shop in town. Now that she knew that Alex had stolen jewelry in the past, maybe he tried to pawn it. Maybe he even stole more. If he needed some funds to keep him afloat, he might have fallen back into old habits. Which meant that he would need someone nearby to trade in the jewelry.

Nikki pushed the door open to the pawn shop and stepped inside. She walked past a collection of baseball cards, piles of sports equipment and an ancient pinball machine. Several glass cases lined the second half of the shop, creating a partition between the shop itself, and the space behind it.
